Police in South Yorkshire crackdown on motorists not wearing seat belts
Tue, 13 Sep 2011

A week-long enforcement campaign which started on Monday 12 September in South Yorkshire aims to target motorists and passengers who fail to wear seat belts.

Police officers will be carrying out operations at known casualty hotspots across the county and they will also be looking for motorists using mobiles. Drivers caught without a seat belt face on-the-spot fines of £60. If a person is prosecuted the maximum fine is £500.

Chief Inspector Stuart Walne told drivers that putting on a seat belt should be part of their routine before starting the car engine.

He said: "If you’re involved in a collision wearing a seat belt could mean the difference between life and death. It makes no sense to continue risking your life by not belting up."

According to research conducted by the government organisation Think! people are twice as likely to die in a collision if you they don’t wear a seat belt and of the 1,432 car occupants killed in the UK in 2007, statistics indicate that around 34 per cent were not wearing a seat belt.
