More than 6 per cent of accidents on roads in the UK are due to ‘lane change’ manoeuvres, causing vehicle damage in excess of £437 million each year, according to new research.
The study conducted by Accident Exchange, a crash management company, analysed 50,000 crashes and found that the number of ‘lane change’ collisions have risen by 48 per cent in two years. In the majority of cases, accidents occur when drivers pull out without checking that there is a car in their blind spot.
Robert Gifford, Executive Director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, said: "Visibility and awareness are key contributors to maintaining safety. All drivers need to be aware that every vehicle has its blind spots and that these will always be different. That is why some car manufacturers such as Volvo have developed blind spot information systems."
He added: "There is a trade-off between occupant protection and all-round visibility. Drivers need to make sure that improvements in their safety do not compromise the safety of others."
