Applying makeup in the car can cause accidents
Wed, 21 Sep 2011

Around 16 per cent of women have crashed or had a near miss as a result of applying makeup while behind the wheel, according to a recent study.

Figures from female car insurance specialist Diamond reveal that a quarter of female drivers apply makeup while driving and almost one in ten (7 per cent) take their hands off the steering wheel completely to apply their makeup.

The research questioned the driving habits of 2,000 female motorists and the results revealed that 47 per cent of them have admitted to checking a text message, a third of them brushed their hair, 34 per cent have eaten breakfast and 32 per cent have drunk hot drinks. A further 18 per cent have checked their emails on their smartphone and almost one in ten (9 per cent) have read the newspaper whilst driving.

Diamond managing director Elwyn Gedrych said: "It's shocking that quite so many women admit to doing these tasks while driving. We all have busy lives but applying your makeup, or checking emails, when you're driving is dangerous as it means your full attention is not on the road ahead."
