Road safety groups have expressed concern about plans by the Government to raise the national motorway speed limit from 70 mph to 80 mph.
According to the Transport Secretary, Philip Hammond, an increased speed limit will help to boost the economy. Analysis by the Department for Transport shows that raising the motorway speed limit would generate significant economic benefits, worth millions of pounds per year in travel time savings.
The transport secretary said: "We must consider the huge economic benefits that can be created by shortening journey times. Increasing the motorway speed limit to 80 mph would generate economic benefits of hundreds of millions of pounds through shorter journey times."
While the top speed on motorways would rise under the proposals, residential areas would see a significant increase in the number of 20 mph zones. The road safety campaign Brake warns that 80 mph is a mistake that is likely to increase deaths and injuries in car accidents, at a time when the government should be taking steps to reduce them.
