Recession may affect number of car accidents and hike up car insurance premiums
Tue, 15 Nov 2011

There were 940 deaths on British roads during the first six months of 2011, according to the latest figures from the Department of Transport, which is almost 7 per cent higher than the 881 killed during the same period last year.

The increase in accidents is likely to have an impact on the number of car insurance claims made and may add to the cost of premiums in the future. In addition, there is speculation as to whether the recession is having an impact upon the safety of roads in the UK.

Questions have been raised over whether cuts in policing, road maintenance and safety budgets could be having an influence on the number of accidents on UK roads. Historical analysis of traffic and accident situations throughout Europe has revealed that roads in the UK are the safest within the continent, however reductions in road safety budgets may affect road conditions.
