New safe driving initiative launched to help drivers this winter
Wed, 30 Nov 2011

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) and Jet Service Stations have launched a new initiative to help motorists drive safely during the winter months and try and reduce the number of car accidents caused by treacherous driving conditions.

There will be 62 Jet Service Stations in the UK offering motorists a safe driving booklet and an ice scraper, free of charge, as part of the initiative. The booklet contains advice about handling difficult driving conditions during winter months, helping save lives and how to avoid unnecessary car insurance claims.

There were a total of 2,328 accidents last year due to vision impairment caused by rain, sleet, snow or fog, which led to 3,318 casualties and 20 deaths.

IAM have also launched a new website, drivingadvice.org.uk, which gives drivers valuable tips, traffic updates and weather forecasts to ensure safe driving. Peter Rodger, chief examiner at IAM, said: "The number of serious crashes on Britain's roads is reducing and we want to see that trend continue. When the weather is bad, firstly you need to ask yourself do you really need to travel at all? If you do, then preparing your car before you set off is as important as your performance on the road when the conditions get tough."
