There are around 1.4 million uninsured drivers on the road in the UK, according to new figures published by a price comparison site .
Moneysupermarket.com is urging all motorists to check the small print of their policies as it varies significantly between different providers of car insurance in relation to being in an accident with an uninsured driver.
The research revealed that motorists with a comprehensive policy will, in most cases, be fully covered and will not have to pay any excess or lose their "no claims discount".
However, there are some insurers which require extra details regarding the uninsured driver and the accident itself such as vehicle registration number, make and model of car and the names and addresses of any witnesses present. Churchill and Direct Line ask for this additional information. LV= require proof that the accident was the fault of the uninsured driver and need to be able to trace the culprit.
Pete Harrison from Moneysupermarket.com said: "If you are involved in a car accident, try to collect as many details as possible such as vehicle registration number, the make and model of the car, the driver's details, as well as the names and addresses of witnesses present as this will help process your claim. I'd also recommend taking photographs of any incident where possible."
