The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued advice to help UK drivers deal with sudden bursts of heavy rain that are expected over the coming days after weeks.
The IAM says that rainfall after a long period of dry and sunny weather can pose a road safety hazard for drivers as it makes the road surface extremely slippery.
Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner explained, "A combination of oil, loose gravel and dried rubber all prevent the tyres working efficiently."
To avoid accidents occurring in these conditions, Rodger says drivers should keep in mind that both visibility and stopping times will be reduced in the rain.
He recommends that motorists should:
Slow down to the point where they can stop within the distance they can see to be clear;
Allow at least twice as much time as usual to come to a halt between themselves and the car in front four seconds;
Make sure they have plenty of tread on your tyres for optimum grip;
Replace windscreen wipers that have been smearing for a while;
Keep a windscreen bottle filled up with water and the appropriate screen wash;
Clean the inside and outside of the screen regularly;
And finally, avoid travelling on the road in stormy conditions.
