Nearly one in five UK motorists put their safety at risk by failing to get faults with their vehicles repaired, in an attempt to save money.
New research carried out by YouGov on behalf of insurance firm Admiral found that 18 per cent UK drivers admitted to ignoring faults with their vehicles, while 15 per cent said they have either reduced or stopped getting their car serviced.
A further 8 per cent of those surveyed said they have overlooked problems with their tyres due to the cost of replacing them.
Sue Longthorn, Managing Director of Admiral, said: "It's a concern that some motorists are willing to drive around with tyres not in the very best of condition. This could cause more serious problems [in the] long term and could even cause them to have an accident ."
A separate study by Santander Credit Cards recently revealed that three in four motorists are driving less, with 62 per cent claiming they cannot afford the running costs.
