Brits putting themselves at car accident insurance risk
Fri, 17 Jun 2011

A large number of Brits could be putting themselves at risk of having to claim on their car accident insurance by cutting corners to save cash.

New research shows that almost one million drivers are skipping their annual vehicle service, which could make their motor more likely to be involved in a crash if it develops a fault.

According to the Swift Cover study, 1.5 million motorists have also switched to six-month tax discs - short-term penny-pinching behaviour that represents a false economy as it will actually cost more in the long run.

With more than three in five (61 per cent) Brits actively trying to save money on their motoring costs this year, the car accident insurance provider is concerned that people could be putting themselves and others at risk .

Claims director Robin Reames explained that a well-serviced vehicle is less likely to have faults.

"So it should go without saying that motorists should ensure that their car is properly serviced," the expert said.

"In the long-term, servicing your car is likely to save you money by keeping it running smoothly - no-one wants to hear that their expensive car problems could have been prevented by shelling out a few pounds for a service."

Meanwhile, the Institute of Advanced Motorists recently called for drivers to take more care when using country roads.
