Joint Operation To Tackle Unsafe Driving A Success
Fri, 15 Jul 2011

Dozens of motorists in north Derbyshire were fined and given warnings earlier this month as part of a joint operation to crackdown on dangerous driving and unsafe vehicles in the area.

Police and road safety officers worked together with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and HM Customs and Revenue (HMRC) to take part in Operation Safedrive on the A617 at Bramley Vale, on Monday 4 July.

Nearly 50 motorists were caught without a seatbelt and a further seven were guilty of driving while using their mobile phones. One driver was also found to have no driving licence .

In addition, a number of vehicles were found to have dangerous parts, illegal window tints, no MOT and illegal tyres .

Four immediate prohibition notices were issued by the VOSA on vehicles too dangerous to be on the road, along with one delayed prohibition for less serious faults.

All diesel vehicles stopped were tested by customs officers who uncovered one running on red diesel and handed the driver a £500 on the spot fine.

Commenting on the operation, PC Tony Bagshaw, of the Glapwell Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "This was a fantastic joint effort to tackle unsafe driving, dangerous vehicles and criminal activity. These continue to take place across the county to educate motorists and prevent accidents ."

The road safety scheme was also carried out on Boythorpe Road, Chesterfield, at the end of June, where 58 motorists were dealt with for a range of driving and vehicle offences.
