Insurer Creates New Pothole Safety Sign
Thu, 07 Jul 2011

A new road sign has been designed by insurance company Confused.com in a bid to help British motorists avoid the estimated 2 million potholes on UK roads.

The triangle pothole sign, which depicts a car wheel swallowed by an uneven surface, is the first of its kind and Confused.com is calling on the Department for Transport to introduce it to roads across the UK. Motorists are also being urged to help with the cause by signing a petition on the Confused.com website.

The pothole sign was unveiled in conjunction with alarming new research by the insurer, which found that it would take councils at least 11 years to repair damaged roads across the UK.

The survey also revealed that 82 per cent of local drivers would welcome a road sign dedicated to potholes as they encounter at least 10 per day.

Mike Hoban, Confused.com’s chief marketing officer, said: "Although repairing these roads is obviously the long-term solution, something needs to be done now."

"Currently the UK's road signs include warnings for wild horses, wild animals, cattle and even toads but potholes aren't considered worthy enough?"

He added: "A pothole road sign is a vital step in preventing accidents and reducing insurance claims whilst road maintenance continues."

Ted Relf, a plumber from Kent who inspired the sign, said: "We all moan about potholes and now we have the chance to do something about them."
