A highly dangerous" stretch of road in East Grinstead, , is to undergo road safety improvement, it has been announced.
West Sussex County Council (WSCC) has confimred that a number of improvements will be made in Holtye Road as part of a £90,000 road safety scheme.
These will include reducing the speed limit from 40 mph to 30 mph, high-friction road resurfacing, enhanced warnings and the installation of two vehicle activated signs.
Police reported 24 collisions between 2004 and 2009 on the notorious stretch of Holtye Road, which covers four sections of the A264 from Moat Road to the East Sussex county border. The road accidents resulted in 31 casualties.
Liz Bennett, county councillor for East Grinstead, said: "It's a highly dangerous stretch of road, where there has been many accidents . We have been lucky not to have a fatality.
"We have got to look at every opportunity available to do something at that junction."
Heidi Brunsdon, also a county councillor for East Grinstead, welcomed the news but said she would like to see regular reviews of the scheme, increased policing and a transport plan to prevent disruption while the roadwork takes place.
Roger Harper, of WSCC's accident prevention and speed management team, said he expects work on the road safety scheme to get underway in autumn this year.
