New research has found that a fifth of UK motorists fail to carry out regular checks on their vehicle, increasing their risk of being involved in a road accident .
A survey by Sainsburys Car Insurance revealed that as many as 21 per cent of drivers do not make monthly maintenance checks, with tyres the least-checked part.
Of the 1,610 adults polled, only 38 per cent said they checked the tread depth on their tyres each month, while some said they only checked their tyre pressure before making long journeys.
Younger drivers were found to be much more lax about carrying out regular overall car maintenance than older motorists, with 29 per cent of drivers aged 18-24 failing to inspect their car, compared to just 15 per cent of drivers aged over 65.
The study also found that women are more likely to ignore basic monthly checks than men (26 per cent compared to 16 per cent).
Of the 21 per cent who admitted to making no regular checks, a third said they did so because they did not think checks are necessary.
Ben Tyte, head of Sainsbury's Car Insurance, said: "It's simple, straightforward and requires just a few minutes to carry out basic checks, and doing so will give you peace of mind that your car is in a good condition and safe to be on the road."
