The number of car accidents between 20 and 24 December has risen by 45 per cent over the past two years compared with the rest of December, which means that during this period, around 56 000 drivers could be involved in a crash, according to Axa .
With December being the worst month of the year for car accidents, December 23 is singled out as the worst day for travelling. Statistics from Axa show that when the UK had snow last December, the number of accidents on the 17th and 18th increased by 124 per cent, compared with the rest of the month.
Sarah Vaughan, motor director at Axa said: "The pressure of Christmas seems to have a negative effect on our driving. Obviously there are larger numbers of drivers on the roads so we would expect accidents to be up, but not to the extent that our statistics reveal.
"We know that it can be a very stressful time of year for drivers with overloaded cars, excitable kids, long journeys and dark, wintry conditions. But it is a sad truth that many will end up spending Christmas sorting out an insurance claim or worse."
