The introduction of intelligent traffic systems could help improve road safety and cut traffic congestion in the UK, it has been claimed.
Freelance motoring journalist Carlton Boyce said such systems have the ability to control the distance between cars and can maximise the use of space on the roads, resulting in less congestion.
He also claimed that features such as linking GPS systems with traffic reports could allow drivers to navigate around problematic areas.
Furthermore, the motoring expert explained that intelligent transport systems can cut the number of accidents as the use of GPS and road-proximity sensors allows "the car can brake automatically and steer away from the collision", ensuring that they "don't steer into other cars or road furniture".
Mr Boyce concluded that within 20 years, intelligent traffic systems may dominate traffic in the UK, with traditional manual car driving for the most part taking place.
