Parents Concerned Over Speeding Traffic
Wed, 10 Aug 2011

Nearly a third of parents in the UK fear their children are more likely to be hurt on roads in the UK than any other country in Europe, according to new research.

A survey of 2,000 people, carried out by road safety charity Brake, found that 83 per cent of mothers and fathers are concerned about the safety of their children around schools and even on streets around their homes, due to speeding traffic.

More than nine in ten (91 per cent) said they wanted motorists to slow down and be more careful when driving through their area, while 74 per cent said more measures should be taken to stop drivers from speeding near schools and community facilities.

The poll also revealed that 70 per cent of parents are worried about their own safety on UK roads.

Brake campaigns director, Julie Townsend said: "We all want to live in safe communities where everyone is able to get out and about. Unfortunately many children can't do this without having to negotiate streets plagued by fast traffic that poses a serious risk to their safety."

"It's time that all drivers took responsibility and slowed down to 20mph or below when driving in communities, so everyone, especially children, get to enjoy their local neighbourhood safely."

"We're also calling on local authorities to follow the lead of places like Portsmouth and put in place more widespread 20mph limits, which are a cost-effective way to help make our communities safer, healthier, and more family-friendly places."

Transport Minister Mike Penning commented: "Britain has some of the safest roads in the world, but if we are to continue to reduce casualties then everyone has a role to play."
