Driver Banned And Fined For Using Two Mobiles While Behind The Wheel
Wed, 17 Aug 2011

A man stopped by police for using two mobile phones while attempting to drive a car has been handed a 12-month ban.

David Secker, of Sprowston, near Norwich, was seen talking on one phone while texting on the other whilst doing 70mph on the A47 at Blofield, Norfolk, on 17 May.

Police said he had no hands on the steering wheel, putting himself and other road users at serious risk of injury, and continued to talk on the phone after being pulled over.

The 34-year-old was sentenced last month at Norwich magistrates after being convicted of using a mobile phone while driving, having no insurance and not being in a position to have proper control. He was also fined £150 and given 14 penalty points on his licence.

Prosecutor Denis King said: "He was seen holding a mobile phone to his right ear and as he moved closer the officer saw he was holding another phone in his other hand as though he was texting."

However, Secker’s solicitor Simon Nicholls claimed he had been holding the second phone to read out a telephone number with his left hand on the wheel, and denied media reports that he used his knees to drive his Vauxhall Tigra .

Nicholls added: "We see people eating apples and doing all sorts of stupid things. It is just unfortunate for David that it happened to be two mobile phones ."
