RoadSafe, the UKs leading road safety organisation, has given its support to Tyre Safety Month.
Launched at the start of the October, the month-long campaign is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of having tyres that are safe and legal.
RoadSafe said: "Tyres are essential in braking, accelerating and steering. A driver risks failure in all three if they are in poor condition. That is why RoadSafe is supporting Tyre Safety Month, this October."
The organisation added that its is vital for motorists to remember that under-inflated or worn tyres have more contact with the road than well-kept tyres, which generates excess heat.
This causes more damage to the tyres and can lead to less grip on the road, reducing control of the vehicle and increasing the chance of skidding.
Over-heated tyres also lose their tread quickly, resulting in frequent replacement and increased fuel consumption.
RoadSafe also highlighted the fact that drivers caught with unsafe tyres can be fined up to £2,500 and three points on their driving licence per illegal tyre.
It said: "Drivers can quickly and easily check their tyre pressure at home or a service station. The manufacturers handbook will have the recommended pressure levels.
"Tread depth can also be checked in minutes, with a simple 20p test. Tread should be a minimum of 1.6mm deep, any less and it is illegal."
