Motorists in the UK have been urged to prepare for winter driving conditions by checking that the tyres on their cars are in good condition.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has reminded drivers of the importance of tyre maintenance, particularly at this time of year when frost and heavy rain increase the risk of road accidents .
It also pointed out that many roads across the UK are likely to be in poor condition due to the government reducing its spending on road maintenance.
Peter Rodger, chief examiner at the IAM, said drivers should check their tread depth, tyre pressure and assess their wheels for damage before starting any journey.
He explained: "Keeping your tyres maintained is an important part of car care, not only for safety but also for fuel economy - under-inflated tyres will increase fuel consumption ."
Last week the IAM also called on the government to ensure that widespread spending cuts do not have a detrimental on the nations road safety standards.
Neil Greig, the IAM's policy and research director, said that budget cutbacks for local highway authorities and emergency services could make it hard to sustain recent progress in reducing the number of deaths on UK roads.
