Councillors in Wanstead, Greater London, have given the go ahead for new road safety measures to be introduced at a busy road notorious for traffic accidents .
Improved signage, an extra pedestrian island, better lighting, more pavement parking and upgraded street surfaces are among a range of improvements that residents hope will make the New Wanstead A-road a lot safer for motorists.
The proposals are part of a £165,000 safety initiative, which was agreed to by members of Area One committee on Monday and is being funded by Transport for London (TfL).
Nearly a dozen people have been injured in traffic incidents in New Wanstead since 2006, giving the road an accident rate more than a third higher than equivalent roads in nearby Redbridge.
Calls for action to improve safety were made by local residents last June following an accident which involved a driver losing control of his car near the High Street junction and crashing into an estate agents' office.
Just weeks later, the driver of Ford sports car was flipped upside down after colliding with parked vehicles near the British Queen pub.
Wanstead residents have welcomed the new safety measures but have also warned the council to go overboard by making it harder for drivers.
