A new road safety campaign has got underway in St Albans, north London, aimed at tackling drink driving during the World Cup .
As part of the campaign, which was launched by the Herts Strategic Road Safety Partnership, posters are being put in local pubs and bars and flyers are being handed out to drivers in the area warning them about the risks of driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, and the consequences they face if they are caught breaking the law.
Drivers are also being reminded that just one drink can take them over the legal limit and that many factors vary the affect of alcohol, such as gender, age and build. Information packs are also being sent out to local businesses.
Chief Inspector Donna Pierce from the Road Policing Strategic Unit said: "While we dont want to discourage people from getting into the spirit of the competition, its important everyone can enjoy the World Cup safely."
"Theres no excuse for drink driving . Well be present round-the-clock to take robust action against anyone who threatens their own and others safety so if you do try to get away with drinking before getting behind the wheel, theres a very good chance youll be caught."
Stuart Pile, Herts County Councils executive member for highways and transport, added: "I certainly hope we have something to celebrate this World Cup, but please give a thought to how youre getting home after each game."
"If youre going to be drinking when watching a match, get a licensed taxi home, arrange for one of your party to be a designated driver or stick to soft drinks its simply not worth the risk. Id urge people to think, how would your life be different if you lost your driving license ?"
