Wed, 16 Sep 2009

Nearly four in 10 motorists in the UK are "seriously distracted" while driving, according to new research.

A motoring survey by the RAC found that 39 per cent of UK drivers admitted to being "seriously distracted" while behind the wheel of a car, a figure that rises to 55 per cent for drivers aged 17-24.

A quarter of this age group admitted to sending or reading a text while at the wheel and 16 per cent said they had put on make-up while driving .

Changing the CD or music controls was highlighted as a distraction by 57 per cent of all respondents, while 41 per cent pointed to the use of sat nav system .

Using a mobile phone (32 per cent) and air conditioning controls (31 per cent) were rated third and fourth respectively, while a fifth of drivers admitted to taking their eyes off the road due to warning lights on their dashboard.

The RAC poll also found that drivers from the South West of England were most likely to lose concentration (45 per cent), while Yorkshire drivers were the least likely (32 per cent).

RAC technical director, David Bizley said the findings "clearly shows that in-car distractions continue to be a significant road safety issue", especially for Britain’s younger drivers.
