Southports elderly residents are being offered the chance to take part in a free road safety course .
The one-day session is the first of a number of events being organised by the Merseyside Road Safety Partnership (MRSP) and is aimed at improving driving skills and road awareness among over 60s .
It comes after casualty figures for Merseyside show that 5 motorists aged 60 and over have been killed, 58 seriously injured, and 715 slightly injured in collisions on roads in the Merseyside area over the past three years.
Overall road accident figures show that since 2006, a total of 2,007 road users have been involved in an accident .
Dave Foulkes, partnership manager for MRSP, said: "We want to support older drivers by helping to increase overall road awareness, ultimately allowing them to remain independent and safer when using their own cars or selecting alternative modes of transport ."
The free road safety session will take place today at the Ramada Plaza Hotel on The Promenade from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.
Attendees will be offered free health checks and eye tests, while a mobility stall will be demonstrating and selling driving aids .
