Drivers regularly break UK speed limits
Wed, 02 Sep 2009

More than eight out of ten drivers in the UK break speed limits, a new study has revealed.

A survey of British motorists carried out by YouGov for insurance company Admiral found that 82 per cent of drivers exceed speed limits occasionally or frequently.

For male drivers, the figure was as high as 86 per cent, while 78 per cent of women motorists admitted to driving too fast.

A total of 3,280 people were polled on their attitudes regarding the safety, costs and practicalities of driving in 2009.

Of these, 14 per cent admitted they had been caught speeding in the last twelve months, and around 60 per cent said they would like to see the speed limit on motorways raised to 80mph or higher.

Sue Longhorn, managing director at Admiral, said: "I'm surprised so many motorists admit to speeding . Our research suggests it's not just commonplace, but routine for the vast majority of drivers."

"What's not surprising is the percentage that get caught speeding with so many breaking the speed limit."

The YouGov research also revealed that just a quarter of respondents thought that speed cameras improved road safety, and only 18 per cent thought more of them should be installed on UK roads.

Ms Longhorn added: "Our research illustrates just how disliked speed cameras are and how suspicious motorists are about the motives of police forces who install them. It would seem that most people think enough is enough."
