A new study has recommended that all new cars in the UK should be fitted with black box recorders, similar to those found in aeroplanes and other aircraft, as they could help cut accident rates and save money .
The three-year EU-funded study revealed that drivers of cars fitted with event data recorders were 10 per cent less likely to be involved in a fatal accident .
It also found that the recorders helped slash the cost of repairs following a collision by an average of 25 per cent.
Currently, data recording devices are only installed in some UK vehicles, such as lorries and emergency response vehicles .
If installed, the recorders would monitor up to 20 pieces of telemetry, including the car's speed, braking force and driver inputs.
Following an accident, the data recorded would be used to help police and insurance companies find out exactly what happened and decide who was at fault.
But according to the study, fitting such technology to all new cars would increase the price of each motor by around £500.
