Parents Warned Over Child Car Seat Safety Risks
Wed, 27 May 2009

Some child car seats are putting young kids at risk because they are so difficult to install, according to consumer group Which?

The organisation has advised parents against buying one particular seat – the Renolux Next Confort – after tests found there was a high risk of fitting it incorrectly because of its complicated design.

The Renolux 360 also performed poorly in the group’s latest comparative crash test, receiving a ‘Don’t Buy’ status after Which? concluded that it offered "woeful protection" in front crash tests.

Which? Car editor Richard Headland stressed that installing a child car seat correctly was vital to preventing injuries in a crash .

He said: "You can buy the safest seat on the market, but it must be fitted correctly to protect a child. We've found some seats difficult to install and others offered poor crash protection, which isn't acceptable."

The top-rated child car seats, which not only offered good protection but also had the clear instructions for easy installation, were Britax Baby Safe Sleeper, the Maxi Cosi Cabriofix with Easyfix base, Mamas and Papas Primo Viaggio Isofix, KiddyInfinity Pro and the Britax KidFix (Isofix).

Which? said it wants more councils to give parents practical advice on the correct way to fit a car seat, and a nationally recognised training standard for shops that sell them.
