Free Car Safety Checks For Torbay Residents
Thu, 11 Jun 2009

Residents in Torbay, South Devon, are being reminded of the importance of wearing a seat belt correctly when driving, or travelling as a passenger, on the road.

Road safety officers in the area are offering free child car seat checks for local residents as part of a campaign to highlight the message of seat belt safety .

The checks can be carried out by appointment at people's homes or at the council office at Roebuck House in Torquay's Abbey Road.

The move comes in response to recent car accident figures which revealed that roughly one third (34 per cent) of the 1,432 people killed in UK road accidents last year were not wearing a seat belt .

According to the data, a worrying 24 per cent of Brits avoid wearing a seat belt when travelling in the back and 10 per cent in the front, while people are also less likely to use seat belts on short or familiar journeys, or when travelling at low speeds.

Torbay Council cabinet member Chris Lewis said: "It doesn't matter whether people are going on a short trip or a much longer one, it is important drivers and their passengers wear seat belts - and that children are sitting securely in child seats ."

He added: "Seat belt and child seat laws are enforced, so we strongly advise people to make sure they comply at all times. Failure to do so could cost them money, but even more importantly it could cost them their lives."

Safety checks can be arranged by contacting Torbay Council's road safety team on 01803 207677.
