School Pupils In Hereford Take Part In Record Breaking Road Safety Walk
Wed, 08 Jul 2009

School children in Hereford took part in a record breaking effort to raise awareness of road safety .

As part of a national campaign from road safety charity BRAKE, hundreds of pupils from Kington Primary School took to the streets last week to form a ‘walking bus’.

Traffic in the town’s high street came to a halt as police closed off the area to help the children carry out their message.

Placards bearing slogans such as "Beware – Take Care" were waved in by the children in a bid to reduce national figures that show children are hurt or killed every 20 minutes on Britain’s roads, with most accidents occurring as children make their way to school .

The walk was organised by staff member Kate van den Ende after junior road safety officers Hannah Allaway and Henry Yeomans registered the whole school as part of the world record attempt to create the longest ever ‘walking bus’.

Kate said: "Schools do discuss and promote walking and cycling to and from school . But how can the children feel and be safe on the congested, narrow streets of small towns like Kington when they have to share the restricted space with cars, lorries and buses?"

Around 150,000 children took part in the nationwide road safety campaign and confirmation of the world record is expected to be announced soon.
