Tue, 21 Jul 2009

Seven people in Ireland have died in the past three days following accidents on the country’s roads, according to reports.

The weekend fatalities included a woman in her 50s who died on Saturday in hospital after she had been injured in a collision in Co Donegal nine days ago, and two motorcyclists.

One in his 40s died on Sunday morning in a head-on collision with a car in Co Monaghan, while another motorcyclist in his 30s died the previous evening when he crashed while taking part in the annual Kells motorbike road races .

The latest road accident casualties mean a total of 143 people have been killed on Irish roads this year and confirm July as the most dangerous month for such fatalities.

Gay Byrne, chairman of the Road Safety Authority, appealed to the nation’s motorists to be more careful when driving .

"For God’s sake, slow down, don’t drink and drive or drive when tired, and always wear your seat belt," he said.

He also urged motorcyclists to be aware that summer is the most dangerous time to be on the roads.

The Road Safety Authority is preparing to launch a TV ad aimed at people with motorbikes after recent figures revealed that a motorcyclist is two to three times more likely to be killed in Ireland than in other countries across Europe .

In addition, the government is to introduce compulsory basic training for motorcyclists before the end of the year.
