Wirral Slammed For Poor Road Safety Figures
Thu, 24 Dec 2009

Wirral, Merseyside, has been named as one of the worst areas in the UK for road safety for children and cyclists.

According to new figures from the Green Party, accident rates for pedestrians of all ages in the town are 30 per cent above the national average, while the child accident rate is a shocking 80 per cent higher than the UK average.

In addition, the number of cyclists killed or seriously injured is 15 per cent above the UK average, and for child cyclists the Wirral rate is 48 per cent higher.

Wirral Council said that the safety of children and cyclists was a top priority and added that it was currently reviewing areas for possible 20mph speed limit zones.

Commenting on the worrying findings, Wirral's Green Party spokesman Pat Cleary said action needed to be taken as soon as possible to prevent more lives from being lost.

He said: "In theory, Wirral is meant to be supporting sustainable travel modes such as walking and cycling . In reality, these figures show that Wirral is a very dangerous place to be a pedestrian or a cyclist."

"The figures for children are truly shocking and will be of real concern to every parent in Wirral."

"The easiest, quickest and most effective way to address the current failings is to make every residential road in Wirral 20mph and ensure that the police take enforcement seriously.

The Green Party data was compiled by pedestrians' group Living Streets using Government figures from the past three years.
