Slough has been named the riskiest town in Britain for road accidents for the third consecutive year in a new road safety report.
Slough has long promoted itself as a "safety town". In the late 1950s, the town was one of the first to introduce a linked sequence of traffic lights timed to stay green for drivers who stuck to the speed limit.
But the report, complied by insurance provider Endsleigh, shows the Berkshire towns accident rate in 2009 was 41.3 per cent higher than the UK average, based on the number of accident claims per driver.
According to the Endsleigh figures, the second most dangerous UK town for motor accidents is Bradford, where the rate was 39.1 per cent above the national average, followed by Birmingham (38 per cent above).
Belfast was named as the safest town for UK drivers, with a claims rate 44.9 per cent below the national average. Bangor in North Wales was the next safest (44.6 per cent below) followed by Swansea (24.6 per cent below).
Only four English towns Norwich, Ipswich, Cambridge and Cheltenham made it into the safest top 10 list, while all of the 10 most dangerous towns listed were in England.
Commenting on the findings, Endsleigh spokesman Stuart Wartalski said: "Clearly there are some parts of the UK which are safer than others when it comes to the frequency of accidents on the road."
"Drivers in Belfast have, for the second year in a row, come out as the safest in the UK and should be congratulated.
"It is also interesting to see that drivers in Scotland are shown to be some of the safest in the UK, even though weather conditions are often more hazardous at this time of the year."
