New research has revealed that skidding on wet and slippery roads is the biggest fear for more than half of all UK motorists .
A recent survey carried out by CCB fast.MAP for online tyre portal mytyres.co.uk found that 55 per cent of the 1,000 drivers polled feared skidding out of control as their worst nightmare on the road.
Breaking down on the road was drivers second biggest fear, while getting a punctured tyre was surprisingly only a major concern for 3 per cent of those questioned.
Road safety group Tyre Safe warns that the risk of a car skidding is increased if its tyres are defective or worn.
The organisation advises motorists to examine their tyres regularly, ensuring that any stones or other objects are removed from the tread, and to check that the tread never falls below 1.6mm the legal minimum tread depth.
Road safety campaigners also recommend that drivers should consider replacing their tyres at around 3mm instead of waiting until they wear down to 1.6mm.
