Young Motorists Urged To Take Part In New Driver Coaching Scheme
Mon, 24 Aug 2009

Young drivers across west Cheshire and Chester are being asked to take part in a new road safety pilot scheme which aims to improve and develop their driving skills and reduce risky road behaviour.

For a 12 month period, participants will have a small black box fitted to their car’s dashboard, which will monitor how the vehicle is being driven.

The GreenRoad sensor will display a green light to signal good driving, while an amber or red light will indicate that the young driver needs to improve their road manoeuvring skills.

The information will be studied by a professional driver trainer who will contact the motorist to talk about how a red light on the machine can be avoided. Parents and carers will also be able to examine the findings online.

Those who demonstrate good driving skills will be rewarded with high street vouchers throughout the year.

Environment Executive Member Neil Ritchie said: "If you are a young driver or a parent of a young driver you should be very concerned because young drivers are four times more likely to be killed or seriously injured ."

"This programme allows those taking part to evaluate driving history on line and get regular feedback from a road safety professional to become a more expert driver and improve fuel consumption."

Sarah Collins, a Senior Road Safety Officer, added: "The black box is already part of Staffordshire’s Young Driver Coaching Programme and results from their pilot programme indicate a massive improvement in a participant’s driving ."

"As part of our pilot scheme we are now releasing a limited number of places subsidised by Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership ."

In order to be eligible for the scheme, drivers must be between 17 and 21 years old and live within the Cheshire West and Chester area.
