New Road Safety Maps For Perthshire Motorcyclists Released
Mon, 10 Aug 2009

A new road safety initiative has been launched in Perthshire in an attempt to cut the number of motorcycle -related accidents and deaths in the region.

A series of maps have been produced by emergency services in Perth and Kinross highlighting road safety hazards on popular routes in the region, as well as information such as the location of speed cameras, service stations and biker-friendly rest stops.

Accident blackspots, bad bends, hidden access roads and areas where bikers can expect wildlife and mud on the roads are all included in the Around the Corner Route Safety Maps.

In 2008, six motorcyclists were killed in Tayside, and 46 were seriously injured on Perthsire’s rural roads, with speed playing a major part in most of the deaths.

According to Inspector Grant Edward from Tayside Police's roads policing unit, many of the accidents could have been avoided "with just a bit more care or a little less speed."

He said: "The maps provide an opportunity for us to offer advice and ask motorcyclists to play their part in making our roads safer by riding with due consideration for other road users, being prepared for the unexpected and taking heed of the informed advice given."

Anneline Wilson, from the Tayside Safety Camera Partnership, said the new maps will help drivers take care on hazardous country routes .

She added: "We want to ensure that motorcyclists' enjoy the roads, know the routes, keep within the speed limits and ride safely for the road and weather conditions they encounter."

The Around the Corner Route Safety Maps will be available from Perth Motorcycles showroom.
