Child Car Seats To Undergo New Testing System
Thu, 13 Aug 2009

Child car seats are set to undergo new, rigorous crash tests and usability trials by the UK's transport research laboratory company TRL.

As part of the new TRL assessment, child seats will be put through front and side impact tests, with each seat tested receiving an overall rating based on a new star rating system.

Stars will be awarded from one star through to a maximum of five, and results will be published on the TRL website (trl.co.uk) and highlighted by major child seat retailers, such as Halfords .

It is hoped the new, comparative data on child seats will offer more protection in an accident, or make the seats easier to use.

Marianne Hynd, head of TRL's child safety centre, said: "Safety in the car is essential and despite the welcome fall in road casualties announced recently by the Department for Transport, we are still seeing far too many young children killed or seriously injured while travelling in cars ."

The new testing system is based on the Government's New Programme for the Assessment of Child-restraint Systems (NPACS) testing protocols and is scheduled to go live early next year.
