Collecting Details After a Car Accident
You must collect the following information at the scene of the car accident:
- contact details including names, addresses and telephone numbers of drivers, passengers and pedestrians involved
- car insurance details
- personal details of the registered owner(s) of the vehicle is (if it is not the driver)
- details of all vehicles involved including make, model, registration number, colour, any modifications and the number of passengers in each vehicle
Additional information
Additional information you should try to collect to assist with any insurance claim includes:
- the time and date of the crash
- a full description of the accident including sketches showing the positions of vehicles involved
- a description of the weather, visibility and lighting conditions, including street lighting, and the type of road
- estimated speed of the vehicles involved
- the names of any witnesses at the scene
- name, "collar number" and force details of any police officer attending and other emergency services details if appropriate
- a list of damage to each vehicle involved in the accident
- a description of any injuries sustained by pedestrians, drivers and passengers involved
- if possible, photos of the accident for use as evidence
Business accidents
If the accident involves a business vehicle, such as a delivery van or hired car, then make sure you take down the details of the company concerned.
Collecting the information mentioned above will not only help you with your claim, but will also protect you against uninsured drivers (one in ten of all UK motorists have been involved in accidents with uninsured drivers).
